Global Short-Trip Home Bases

The best cities in each region for setting up a temporary home base and running quick regional getaways from it. The criteria are consistent throughout: cheap regional flights, generous visa allowances for most Western passports, a livable cost of living, and a dense ring of destinations one to four hours away. Visa figures below are quoted for US passports as the common case — check your own nationality, since allowances vary widely.

A base works differently from a tour. Instead of moving every few days and paying the tax of constant transit, you rent somewhere for a month or more, keep your things in one place, and fly out on three-to-five-day loops. The economics only work where the outbound flights are cheap and the visa clock is generous, which is what this list is selecting for.

Southeast Asia — Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur

Bangkok (BKK and DMK) is arguably the best short-trip base in the world. Don Mueang (DMK) is the budget hub — AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion — with one-way fares across the region running $30–80. Within about two hours you can reach Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Yangon, Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Singapore is around two and a half hours, Bali about four. Overnight trains run north to Chiang Mai and south toward Malaysia.

US passports get 60 days visa-free, extendable, and border runs to Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia double as getaways in their own right. The playbook: take a monthly apartment in Ari, Thonglor or on the riverside, watch the AirAsia and VietJet flash sales, run three-to-four-day hops (Luang Prabang, Siem Reap, Hoi An, Penang), and time the visa clock so that a Vietnam or Malaysia trip resets it.

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is AirAsia's home fortress and often turns up cheaper fares than Bangkok. It is better positioned for Indonesia, Singapore, South India and Sri Lanka, offers 90 days visa-free, and has a lower cost of living. The trade-off is that KL is a less lively place to spend the in-between weeks.

Also considered: Singapore has the best connectivity of anywhere in the region but costs three to four times as much to live in; Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are cheap but require an e-visa and have thinner route networks; Bali is a spoke rather than a hub.

East Asia — Taipei and Seoul

• Taipei (TPE) — two to three hours from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Okinawa, with low costs and easy visa-free entry.
• Seoul (ICN) — more flight volume and strong budget carriers (Jeju Air, T'way), but higher living costs. Tokyo is wonderful and less central, and expensive enough that it makes more sense as a destination than a base.

South Asia — Colombo or Delhi

Colombo suits a compact country with easy hops to the Maldives and South India. Delhi has the network but is a harder place to base yourself day to day. On balance the region rewards touring more than basing.

Middle East — Dubai or Istanbul

• Dubai (DXB) — the Gulf, the Caucasus, East Africa and India all sit under four hours away, offset by high living costs.
• Istanbul (IST) — Turkish Airlines' enormous network plus Pegasus budget fares put Greece, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Egypt and the Levant within short hops. Stays of 90 days, and it pairs naturally with Europe as a Schengen-reset base.

Europe — Lisbon and Budapest

• Lisbon — cheap by Western European standards, with a big budget-carrier presence (Ryanair, easyJet, TAP) and bonus hops to Madeira, the Azores and Morocco.
• Budapest — Wizz Air's home, with Vienna, Prague, Krakow and the Balkans one to two hours away by air or train.
• The constraint for both is the Schengen 90/180 rule, which is exactly why Istanbul is the natural reset base for a longer European stretch.

Africa — Cape Town or Johannesburg, and Nairobi

• Johannesburg (JNB) has the continent's best network: Victoria Falls, Botswana, Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique. Cape Town is the nicer place to actually live, at the cost of some connectivity.
• Nairobi (NBO) covers East Africa — Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia — with Jambojet as the budget option.

North America — Mexico City

Cheap living, 180-day visa-free stays for US passports, and one-to-three-hour hops to Oaxaca, Mérida, Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica and Cuba. The best base in the Americas by a clear margin.

South America — Medellín or Lima

• Medellín — mild climate, low costs, 90 days visa-free and extendable, with Cartagena, Panama, Ecuador and Peru reachable on Avianca, LATAM and Wingo.
• Lima — better long-haul connections, and Cusco, Bolivia and Chile easily reached.
• Bear in mind that distances are simply bigger here: a "short hop" often means two to four hours.

Oceania — Sydney or Brisbane, with a caveat

There is no true short-hop hub. New Zealand is about three hours away, Fiji four, Bali six. Oceania is better treated as a destination region than as a base.
